Case Study: Installing Complex Architectural Graphics for Florida Hospital

What does it really take to install large-scale architectural graphics correctly?

Client: Fren Inc (Media Partner based in Savannah, GA))
End Client: Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola Hospital
Location: Pensacola, FL

What does it really take to install large-scale architectural graphics correctly?

It takes planning, testing, specialized equipment, and an installation team that understands construction—not just printing.

This case study highlights a project where Capital Wraps was brought in not just to print murals, but to solve problems on-site, coordinate with multiple trades, and ensure the final result matched the original creative vision—even as conditions changed during construction.

Project Overview: Healing Through Immersive Design

Fren Inc, a media and experiential design company based in Savannah, Georgia, was commissioned to design a fully immersive ICU environment for Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola Hospital.

The goal was to transform a newly constructed ICU wing into a calming, local-inspired experience for recovering patients. The designs incorporated:

  • Coastal murals inspired by the Pensacola area

  • Sailboats that appeared to move

  • Interactive TVs integrated seamlessly into wall graphics

  • Animated Blue Angels flying across the scene

  • Subtle sunset transitions for mood and warmth

Fren Inc handled concept, design, and interactive elements. Capital Wraps was brought in as the production and installation partner, responsible for turning digital concepts into durable, perfectly aligned wall murals inside an active hospital construction site.

Why This Project Required Specialized Installation Expertise

Architectural graphics—especially in healthcare environments—are very different from standard wall wraps or decals.

This project required us to:

  • Travel out of state and coordinate logistics

  • Work inside an active construction zone

  • Install murals during phased build-out

  • Verify wall conditions before printing

  • Adjust for last-minute equipment placement

  • Return post-construction for repairs

Many print shops can produce murals. Very few can manage everything that happens after the print leaves the shop.

Challenges We Encountered (and Solved)

1. Paint Adhesion Failure (A Common but Critical Issue)

During our pre-installation testing phase, we identified a serious issue:
The wall paint was not properly bonded to the drywall.

The cause?
The painters had not used a primer/sealer before painting. This meant adhesive films would fail—no matter how good the vinyl was.

Our solution:

  • Halted installation before failure occurred

  • Worked with the construction team to identify affected walls

  • Required re-priming using a clear sealing coat that bonded through the paint to the drywall

  • Retested adhesion before proceeding

This step alone likely saved the project from widespread failure months later.

2. Field Measurement Changes After Printing

Despite accurate site measurements and generous bleed allowances, construction realities changed.

Some headwall equipment was installed on different walls than originally planned.

Our solution:

  • Adjusted artwork placement on-site

  • Reprinted only the affected mural sections—not entire walls

  • Maintained design continuity without visible seams or compromises

This flexibility is only possible when design, print, and install teams communicate tightly.

3. Post-Installation Construction Damage

As is common on large construction projects, some work continued after mural installation.

This resulted in minor wall damage in a few locations.

Our solution:

  • Returned to site after final outfitting

  • Repaired and replaced damaged sections

  • Ensured the finished space matched the original design intent

What Sets Capital Wraps Apart in Architectural Graphics

This project demonstrates why many agencies, designers, and general contractors rely on Capital Wraps for architectural installations:

  • We travel with purpose, not guesswork

  • We rent and operate lifts safely and efficiently when needed

  • We test wall conditions before printing

  • We understand construction sequencing

  • We don’t outsource installation to unknown third parties

  • We stand behind the project—even after install day

Many shops can print murals.
Fewer can manage risk, change, and execution at this level.

The Final Result

The completed ICU wing is immersive, calming, and visually stunning.
The murals integrate seamlessly with interactive screens and architectural elements, creating a space that feels intentional—not applied after the fact.

Most importantly, the environment supports healing, comfort, and a sense of place for patients and families.

Summary: What This Case Study Proves

Successful architectural graphics require more than great design—they require technical expertise, on-site problem solving, and accountability from start to finish.

By partnering closely with Fren Inc and the construction team, Capital Wraps helped transform a complex healthcare environment into a meaningful visual experience—despite real-world challenges along the way.
